Engine cutting out going up a hill

Post by rick miller » Fri Aug 12, 2011 8:15 am

Hi all, my dream was running good, didn't ride for a few weeks, when I did, when I throttled to go up a hill, at low speed, the engine ran slow, no power, and died. Took the carb off and cleaned, tried adjusting it, got a big backfire. Also checked the screen in the petcock, which was clean and the gas cap. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Be sure to check the gas cap vent. If it clogs with corrosion or old gas/varnish it can create a partial vacuum in the tank. I fixed mine (non painted cap) by soaking it in mineral spirits and then hitting it with the air compressor.

Could have been some water in the fuel? Sometimes if in a humid environment water can condense in fuel tanks. That is the only thing that would make sense to me considering it occurred while going uphill. Look in the fuel tank and see if you see a blob of water on the bottom of the tank. If so or even if not try to drain some of the fuel out of the tank with the bike on a slight incline and this may solve the water problem if you have one.

Good luck,
Jethro

Rick,

Please edit in your location when you get a chance. Pull the plugs and check the color, clean and or replace them. You should also do Ed's tune up recipe, look in the yellow bar on the left, FAQs, then how do I tune my...........

Hi Davo, I'm in Stillwater, mn. must be having a senior moment, can't figure out where the yellow bar is, left of FAQ for Ed's recipe. Could you help a little more to find it. thanks a lot.
