I just tore the oil filter apart as I reassemble the clutch side. Turns out the rotor body was heated up and the small end and got crunched and flared out (previous post), the shaft was all gouged (the hidden inside portion), and the o-ring was crimped and pretty thrashed places. The inside was filled with greasy Aluminum particles and shavings. The gear was also free spinning on the rotor body.

Question: isn't the gear supposed to be an interference fit, and firmly in place?? I'm getting another assembly from Fast Fred, but I was wondering if the gear can be attached with epoxy or JB weld ... or should it be relegated to becoming a piece of motorcycle body jewelry or art?

And yes LM, I'm going to put the thrust washer on the outside ;)

With that damage, I'd just replace the rotor, end cap and shaft rather than worrying about whether or not the gear had come loose. Someone has to have a spare at a reasonable price I would think.

Dana, I'd imagine that the sprocket is probably heat-fitted, much like a car starter ring gear onto the flywheel. We used to plonk the flywheel in the freezer for a couple of hours then heat the ring gear, whip the flywheel out and it just drops onto the shoulder. Let it all settle back to room temperature and Robert's Your Mother's Brother!

I finally found the culprit to the mysterious mangled oil filter (with Fast Fred's help).

When I took it all apart, the little shaft locator pin was missing. I assume the PO left it out. That enabled the shaft to spin and wobble thus causing excessive wear to the shaft and lots 'O heat to the boss and filter body. That worked the filter gear loose so that it spun freely about the filter body. That caused the oil to not be filtered. WOW!

However I don't think the PO changed the oil anyway. The filter was totally filled with greasy gunk and Aluminum particles.

Case closed.

That's what the filter is supposed to look like. It's a centrifuge design so it slings the heavy stuff to the outside and keeps it there. The aluminum probably came from the failure you are talking about. With the oil in there and the sprocket spinning at speed, that filter was spinning for sure. Might have been spinning with the shaft rather than on it, but it was spinning and working to some extent.

Or perhaps it used to rotate normally and filter the oil, and over time the bond was broken and eventually the sprocket turned without spinning the filter.

The only thing we can tell for sure is that it needs to be replaced :-)
