Hi,

Indeed, Honda says 10W, but a heavier (fork) oil will make the front end a bit better. 30W seems a little to heavy, but you can start with 15 if you think the forks are under damped. Ofcoarse fork oil is better then engine oil, and maybe it's wise to change the fork seals too.

Fork oil is hydraulic oil, which is very high detergent oil. It also resists foaming, which effects dampening. One can add 1/2 - 3/4 inch pvc spacers in the spring chambers to help with bottoming, and run 15 - 20 wt fork oil for a much improved front end.

the maintenance standards section of the honda service manual gives the cb72/77 fork oil capacity as 250ml.

later in the construction section of the same manual it says "there contains white spindle oil 220"

was this a typo or maybe a difference between early and late forks?

i'm just repeating what the copy of the factory service manual states...

(if it matters, i was planning to use either mobil 1 synthetic atf or some of the extra benz atf i have)

Spindle oil as I know it is a utility oil which the machine industry knows has uses in certain area/locations of machines including bikes and rather than say 5W-30 Detergent they say white spindle oil 220.
Surely ya are aware that the fork oil in the early bikes was referred to as spindle oil and was/is fish oil.
Don't belive it!
Smell it when ya are the first to replace it. ............lm
