Hanging revs..

Post by danielzink » Sun Apr 02, 2017 2:38 pm

So.

Upon startup - the bike is cold blooded...expected...

Once it gets good and warmed up though...revs will hang...way high even though the throttle is completely closed..

Like crazy high...

I've converted to a standard twist throttle so I know it's not the slide hanging up...

Earlier this winter I purchased a carb rebuild kit from classichondarestoration.com...

A good soak in the Chem-dip and the rebuild...everything looked sparkly clean..

I checked...double check...triple checked and even quadruple checked my timing...

One modification that I did do was put a set of fishtails on it...they are straight pipes..

Any thoughts ?

Thanks for any help !

Check for a vacuum leak around the manifold connections.

Pull on the throttle cable, turn the bars, and see if that changes the revs. If there isn't enough slack in the cable you will be pulling the slide up and making it rev when you put tension on the cable housing.

Checked the throttle cable a bunch....it does it while just sitting in the barn idling...turning the bars doesn't make any difference...leave the bars stationary and give the throttle a blip and it just revs and hangs there for a good couple of seconds....

I'll check for manifold leaks....

Chances are that's where the problem lies.

If you're CERTAIN that the throttle is closing properly you could check out the advance retard unit. Have you checked the ignition timing at full advance with a strobe? I had just this problem and found a CA advancer with missing rubber stops in my CL motor. Fitting a good, correct CB advancer cured the problem completely and transformed the bike. Crank mounted electronic would be even better!

So the manifold leak check was inconclusive....no change...

Idle still hangs...

I decided to pull the carb and check it over....

mind you....I soaked this carb in Berrymans....took apart every piece that I could...bought a carb rebuild kit and replaced all the gaskets etc.

This thing was sparkly when I remounted it to the bike...

Upon disassembly tonight I found this....

:(

The slide had a "filmy...sticky" buildup on one side...

And the carb throat ? oy....

And lastly...I checked the float levels....my bad as I had never done that at initial disassembly/re-assembly...

The floats were "bent" for lack of a better word...

One side was good at the 26.5 and the other one was probably at about 32....it was bent that bad..

I'm guessing I pulled some old fuel out of the bottom of the tank and it gummed things up again...

I'll re-assemble tomorrow night and give 'er another whirl.

So I removed the carb and "re-cleaned" everything....

Fixed the bent float and set both to 26.5..

At re-assembly I put all the old jets and needle back in (after a couple hour soak in the Berryman's)....

And guess what...

Runs like a "dream" (see what I did there ?)....
