Thanks, 48, I'm going to hike over to the local auto parts store to see what they have before I order online, but those sources look good.

I decided to test the coil with my cheapo analog multimeter. The primary is good, but I can't test the secondary - my multimeter doesn't have the range. Time to buy a good one, I think.

Looks like Dennis Kirk has it in 6' lengths for $3.95 which ain't bad:

I think I have a lot of that wire left and I can check tonight. PM me with the length you need if you want to buy it from me. My price is $0 + postage.

Thanks, 48, that's kind of you. Whether my old coil is still good or not, I'll need wire. PM sent.

Meanwhile, I've spent quite a bit of time online today, trying to find a NOS coil. I found one in Japan, but payment can only be made by bank transfer. That's a huge pain and didn't go well for me the last time I tried it. I think I'm out of options for a new stock unit and might have to go with something else.

I decided to re-use my old coil and hope that the secondary is okay. New wires fitted with new bamboo retaining pins. I used hot glue. Looks ok.

As I was messing about this morning, I noticed that I had not tightened down the front brake stay. Something doesn't look quite right there, so I've posted a photo in hope that someone might comment. Is the stay the right side out? The bolt that secures it to the front fork doesn't seem to engage the nut enough.

Hi. If I may chime in. I had to replace my coil and discovered that a mid 70's Kawasaki 400 had the identical coil. The wires were a different length so I had to replace them but the coil was fine. Hope this helps you in your search. Regards, Jeff.

Of course you may chime in, Jeff. I appreciate comments and suggestions.

Thanks for that alternative coil information. I have lots of work to do before the engine is ready to start and I'm in no hurry, but I think I'm going to try the one I have. If it fails, I'll look closely at the one you've mentioned. Did it fit the Honda bracket? Most of the after market coils I've looked at had 90mm between the mounting holes. My stock unit has 120mm and I really would like to use the stock bracket. Any idea what the primary resistance is?

Progress is at a snail's pace right now. I must move the engine back from the table where it now sits to my work bench so that I can brace it in order to remove the shift drum retainer screws with an impact screwdriver. New badges arrived, as did a new starter solenoid switch.

No work on the bike today though. I'll be shoveling 12 inches of fresh snow.

Well, I still happen to have my old coil so here it is beside the one from the Kawasaki (1974 I think): The Honda is the caramel colour and the beige belonged to the kawi.
