That part MUST be installed with the shift fork guide pins removed so the forks can move along the drum.
Yes you must split the cases. ................lm

what a shame, but Ed is right. that drum/retainer is one of the first things to go in. do it right, tear it down. your retainer ring is showing some wear from rubbing etc, so get another one. LOCKTITE those 6mm screws. they can back out and cause the same symptoms all over again.

Take it out and look at the contact area it shows.
It's ONLY the inside corners and that will not align the part to the drum as it is designed and will cause LOTS OF DRAG.
When installed correct6ly the part installs full contact in the groove in the drum.
If you want to ride the bike you WILL NEED TO SPLIT THE CASES. .............lm

Just for the heck of it, pull the right side crankcase cover and check out the neutral switch. It sits close to the front sprocket and can be easily dinged by a foreign object(or a broken chain). If it gets dented it can bind up the shift drum from turning freely.

That incorrectly installed part is/was a problem.
If anything would do as you suggest I can only imagine what the neutral switch would look like.
Fact are that!
To install thaqt part requires spliting the cases!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. ...............LM

The wheel won't go all the way into the depression in the shift drum. The arm behind the wheel contacts the part that is installed upside-down. I agree there's no way to put it on right-side up without splitting the cases. I guess you could get creative with the arm/wheel assembly to prevent that interference but I think I would just split the cases and do it right...
