crunching gears

Post by Woodsie » Wed May 20, 2015 9:48 am

My gears clunk when I go into 1st then when I go to 2nd. I let the rpm's die down going into 3rd and 4th and it is ok. The clutch appears to be disengaging. It is a 305 ca77. I'm guessing that it is in the gearbox. Any suggestions on how to further diagnose this before I go any further.

After more riding to work and back I have noticed this, when I back off the throttle to change gear, the rpm's take a second to die down. If I wait till the rpm's die down, then change gear, it will not crunch. I also took nearly all the slack out of the clutch cable, the clutch does not engage until the lever is most of the way out. The clutch does not slip at all when the lever is released. I'm thinking I have a couple of problems.

I would work on fixing the high idle. Does it have a hanging idle when revving in neutral? Try lowering your idle so it just ticks over and see if it still hangs up on deceleration. Sometimes the ignition advance springs weaken, thus causes the idle to stay high for a couple of seconds before it returns to normal. My Dream was doing that when I bought it, but after about 10 miles and leaning out the idle circuit, just a bit, plus a new cable, the hanging idle stopped.

I have the idle set lower. I have also ridden the bike enough now to almost get through gears without crunching. I can get into 1st ok but going up to 2nd it doesn't crunch but I can definetly feel it, up to 3rd and 4th is fine, as is going down to 3rd and 2nd and I only go down to 1st when I am stopped. I am hoping that if something is worn out it is the clutch. The question is, what else could be causing the difficulty going from 1st to 2nd?

I had the same (but much more serious) problem that you're experiencing. You can do a search of this site for "problems shifting out of 1st gear" and pull up a dozen threads.

My specific issue was my shift forks were worn and there was a worn hole in my kickstart shaft that caused it to be tough shifting from 1st to 2nd. I had to rebuild the whole transmission, haven't had a chance to try it out yet but Loud Mouse helped me out because he's the man.

I don't seem to have much luck with searching so I went back page by page and came across a similar post and the advice given there was that it sounded like either the selector rollers and/or selector drum. I am going to take it off the road so I don't end up with damaged gears.

That's my thread, it hasn't been updated though. I sent my gear shafts to Loud Mouse and he inspected and repaired them for me. Reasonable price, too. He's a godsend to this forum.

Here's another thread with a similar issue, it might help?
