Engine for my 305 Scrambler ?

I recently purchased a 305 scrambler from a buddy, it is a project bike.
As I'm just getting started -- I wanted to be sure what I had. .The
bike is a: CL77, Engine # CL77E-1022572 (305 scrambler) Is this a:
1967 model or a 1968 model?? I have READ that the CL72 and the
CL77 are basically the same bike. (except for displacement) Is this true??
I have tried to find a service manual for the CL77, But I'm finding out
that Honda only made one for the: CL72! Is this true? I'm told this
was done ---- because they are pretty much the same bike! One is the
250cc and the other a 305cc, other than that -- most of the parts are the
same? Correct? Any advise would be appreciated! Thank you! This
bike -- NEEDS a lot of work. But hey, Is that not where the FUN begins?
Where is a good place (on-line) to FIND Honda 305 parts???
I'm sure there must be some parts out there!!?? How about:

Welcome! CL72 and CL77 are pretty much the same bike but there are detail differences. The CLs share some parts (mainly engine) with the CA and CB range, but not everything.......

The CL72 production started first, they overlapped for a while then the CL77 continued to the end which I think was '67. Some were sold in '68 onwards but they were '67 bikes. The CL/SL350 carried on in '68.

A CL72 manual will be fine but search the yellow left-hand menu for Bill Silver's restoration guides which can be pretty helpful.

Spares can be found with a number of online sellers such as Ohio Cycle, David Silver Spares, CMS in Holland and Classic Honda Restorations. eBay is, of course, always there.

Technical help? You have found this forum which is probably your best source. Use the search facility before asking questions as most of your questions will have been covered many times before....... :-)

Thank-you for making a Post on my thread! I do appreciate all
the Information you have supplied on the: CL72/CL77 -- Bikes!

I have updated my profile with my location and I will LOOK
into the HONDA CL72 Service Manual. Apparently, Honda
ONLY made this Manual -- and NONE with the Title:
Service Manual for a: CL77. Because -- I guess -- due to the fact
the CL72 and the CL77 are so similar! True? Question:
Do they SHARE the same: Bottom end!?? ( Crank etc. !) I
have READ (somewhere) that except for the Cylinders and
the TOP END -- they are pretty much the same bike!?
I will ALSO --- Look into Bill Silver;s -- restoration manual.
Question: Are HIS (bill silver) manuals WORTH the price
of admission!>??? IF they are, I will LOOK into that manual too!
I do intend to use this Forum -- as a source of INFO for my

Yes ther is only th eCL72 manual but for most purposes the CL77 is the same.

The cranks are slightly different as the CL77 pistons are haevier and need a different crank balance arrangement. Having said that there are plenty of 305s with 250 cranks and vice versa after 50 years...

The Bill silver manuals are useful but not as useful as a Honda manual and parts book.

There is also a Clymer manual.

The Clymer manual is pretty good. They actually still print it for the CA/CB/CL but they combine it with a few Kawasaki models? I used to have a downloadable copy on my website not knowing that the Clymer manual was still available for purchase. To my surprise Clymer contacted me and politely asked that I remove it from my website since it was still in
print.

The David Silver info is well worth it in my opinion. I would get it on CD as it includes a lot more info than the paper books/manuals do.

No problem to find the manual on e-bay. The parts cd is a must have. By the number you listed it looks more in the 66 year range to me.
