How do i remove the speedo needle from the shaft on both a cb72 and ca 78
Both the speedos have become unstable and are starting to squeak
Does it just prise off and if so where do you lever from to prevent damage
will the shaft then lift out to give access to the bottom bearing
Many thanks Peter

Cover the speedo face with cardboard around the needle and with two screwdrivers you can prise up the needle. It will probably fly off into a dark corner so keep a watch on it. You can then take off the dial and expose the mechanism beneath.

Pry up the needle
I read a post a while back where someone used 2 regular table spoons, one on each side. The trick is to pry against the top of the screws to each side that hold the face on. Do it with steady pressure and it will eventually let go. One time I broke the solder joint that holds the needle on to the part that mounts on the shaft and I wondered if I was applying too much force at once.

I would guess your needle was seized to the shaft and merely broke at the weakest point, your soldered joint, as mechanical things tend to do.
I have dismantled a 400F speedo and used the 2 teaspoon method against the centre of the needle, the curve of the spoon giving a good pivot, and yes the needle does fly off at some speed, cover it with a small cloth to slow it down.
