Time to kick the hornets nest and stir up debate again... I thought I read somewhere that the 305 motors don't have enough "pushing" power to force oil through a paper media and not starve the top end of oil? Does Cappellini get their tests #'s on their larger 8mm oil pump?

Modern Lamborghini's are a perfect blend on Italian style and German mechanicalsm. When it comes to classic italian I'd sell a body part for a Maserati 3500 GT.

Typically a good gear-type pump (which is what 305s have) is capable of creating pressure up to 3000psi when it is used in hydraulic equipment so pressure shouldn't be an issue. In the case of the Superhawk pump, Jensen has done some tests on new pumps to show that they do not create much pressure. This suggest that the clearances, even in a new pump, are too large.

The Cappelini may address the pressure (tighter clearances) and flow (wider gears) so may be a better all-round solution. Unlike a plain bearing engine, the Superhawk roller bearings are very leaky and so it is not possible to generate much pressure in the system anyway. The important thing is to move sufficient oil around the important parts of the engine.

Indeed G, the pump of a 305 is a volume pump, since the engine contained only ball / roller bearings. A good pump is more then sufficient for the 305 engine when the engine is used were it was designed for.

But most pumps I have seen and tested do show wear and because of that, leakage (mostly around the tops of the gears) is high, especially when the pump has to overcome a "blockage". A paper filter is a sort of blockage, and will reduce the pumped volume, even more when it's dirty, this is the reason why Cappellini offers a pump which is capable of pumping an higher volume, and since the pump is new, probably a higher pressure.

So really, I shouldn't even consider this kit unless I also wanted to buy their oil pump too. Hmm, an extra $400....think I'll just stick with what I have for the time being.

Absolutely. Although it would be interesting to test their pump alongside an original Honda one. I'm tempted to rebuild a Honda pump with minimum clearance to see what it will do.

Hi G,

I did build several oil pumps from only NOS parts, the volume and pressure of a pump build up this way is better then any used pumps. And Vince, an advice from me, better invest that money in good oil / magnetic oil plug and very regular oil changes.
