NAKED PICTURES ...of my clutch

Post by 48lesco » Wed Mar 13, 2013 9:42 pm

Took this clutch out of CB77E 108333 last year. The sprocket was a little wiggly on the outer so I replaced it. I was going to scrap it, but out of curiosity I drilled the rivets out and was a little surprised by what I found. By all appearances I would have said it was not a "cush" drive. Full of rubber donuts???

I replace one from my late 63 CA for the same reason and did the same thing ( just never got around to posting pictures) and it's exactly what you have there. The "Cush" which I replaced it with is different in other respects. Has anyone taken a "Cush" apart like this for a comparison of this part?

In hindsight, I don't think the little bit of rotational slop in that sprocket would have been a problem at all. Wondering if all the 250/305 clutches that look like this one are "cush-drives." I have another one that I believe is earlier and does not have the backing plate on the sprocket. The rivets are right on the sprocket itself and maybe that's a "hard drive." I'll post a picture of that one tonight.

Here's the earlier clutch outer. Pretty sure no "cush" in there... This clutch was set up with 6 disks and worked fine. Sprocket is tight.

So, the common advice here has been to scrap these outers if the sprocket is a little loose. I guess I wouldn't now if it has a backing plate on the sprocket and the rivets are tight. Given this and OldStan's experience too, there's probably donuts in there and they probably just shrunk a little. Anybody need a sprocket?

The true one has a neoprene disk between the sprocket and aluminum hub. .........lm

I'm gonna keep it, but do you agree (LM) that the rubber donuts are in all of the clutches with the sprocket backing plate, and that they are usable with a little ~1/16" slop? Just trying to keep folks from throwing clutches out...
