Clutch cable routing later CA77 Dream...

I have a 1965 bike with a 1963 engine. The clutch cable was replaced by a prior owner to the longer version (enters the case from the rear at a 45 degree angle) so as to work properly with the early engine side case.

Well, I'm now replacing the right side cover with a refinished later style and have the new, shorter clutch cable for the job (HONDA still sells the later version with the chrome tubing near the lever). Question is where the proper routing of the new cable should be? Can anyone explain, or better yet post a pic, of how the later style cable runs through the frame and out to the cover?

Rather than run the new, shorter cable through the frame (as in pic 1) and then out the smaller hole several inches behind that (pic 2) I just ran the cable over the steering lock, through the gap beteween the tank and the frame, and straight down to the case. Looks perfect. I thought running it into the frame and then back out so quickly would make the cable susceptible to some binding.

Yes, that's the right way to route it. On the lever end, it should go thru a hole in the sheet metal at the top of the fork behind the speedo. All of these cables will tell you where they want to go if you have the right length cable and fix both ends properly. They shouldn't have any severe bends and they should work over the full steering travel. Nice looking Dream - love that blue!
