Speedometer housing/rubber packing

Post by 68Cb77 » Tue Mar 13, 2012 4:08 pm

How was the speedometer originally attached to the rubber housing part that screws in to the headlight? Was it just a tight fit, or was the speedo somehow glued to the rubber housing? Mine is loose, speedo keeps working its way out. The rubber is actually not it too bad a shape.....any hints/ideas? Thanks, John.

Glued. I have used 3M weatherstrip adhesive, you can get it in black, and I've also used black silicone sealant.

Ah, thank Davo, I used contact cement the first time, but it didn't work very well, and made a kind of a mess. I'll try the silicone stuff

My gasket was marginal. I used liquid electrical tape to restore the cracks and irregularity. It stayed pliable and left a nice black finish. (took a few coats on some spots) Then I used clear weatherstrip adhesive as Davo suggested.

This is what I used

I put on the black silicon sealer today. I'll let it sit and see how it looks tomorrow. Hopefully it will be fairly strong.
