placement of exhaust gasket

correct me if I am wrong,in the photo shouldn't the gasket be on the face of the flange instead of the back side of the flange as depicted in the photo? Came off 61 ca77, no doubt an older ( oem ) gasket...jk

You are correct. Gasket goes between the head and the flange.
