I rode these bikes in the early 60's and NEVER blew a bulb other than when I missed 2nd gear getting on the freeway and OVER REVVED the engine TERRIBLY. (several beers at 2:30 AM)
So we don't know the voltage when ya blew the bulb.
It's been known since the early 60's that ya need to have the battery at 12 volts or ya will blow bulbs.
From what I can tell ya first clue was it wouldn't start with the starter so ya kicked it.
Tis possible the full wave rectifier (radio shack) could keep the bulbs from blowing when the battery is low but who's to know.
Tis a shame ya charged the battery after the fact.
Sort of like ya can change parts but ya still need a 12 volt charge to ride these bikes. ...............lm

The old selenium rectifiers work but the full wave radio shack ones work much better. I put one on my Dream and it keeps the battery charged really well. It turns the starter over very strong and I have not charged that battery for six months. They are only $3.50 and require very little wiring. Super easy. I highly recomend it.
My bikes tend to sit for weeks between rides, so here's what I do. I turn the headlight switch on the bucket to on position. I then put the handlebar switch in the middle position, so the headlight is off, but the extra charging coil is enlisted to bring the battery up. I have not blown any bulbs doing this. Not all bar switches have that option, and you have to finesse it into the middle position. I always upgrade the rectifier to a modern solid state unit.
