Early swingarm looks different...

Post by scum » Mon Jan 22, 2007 5:24 pm

One of my parts bikes has a swingarm that is not like the ones on my other CB77s. It has cast axle carriers/adj marks and it looks like the swingarm tube material is inserted into the cast part and welded, just like the steering head is installed. All the other dimensions seem to be the same, it's just made differently. Anyone know why they stopped this type and went to the more common type? Probably cost of manufacture, but maybe the early type was recalled or faulty? Anyone know? thanks, Brother scum...

The parts book and fiche are of no help with your question. As I know this part it was changed sometime in late 64 early 65 but I have no proof. My suspicion is the part was changed to speed construction and lower cost at the same time and have a good strong part. Just my thoughts. ........................lm

FWIW, the CR93 built during 1962-63 used both types of swingarms concurrently. The welded up type was used on the street version, while the unit construction type was used on the race version. One conclusion is that the welded type is heavier and possibly more durable. In racing, weight saving measures often take precedence over longterm durability. With the CB77, it may be that the unit construction type had economic advantages, given the large production runs. I believe the CL77 used the welded type throughout its production.

The CL77's came with the early welded lugs on the end and then to the tapered end with the inserted axle locater/holder. Early issue used from #1 to 1014495 then the late issue was used. .............lm
