It could be stuck between gears, or in a higher gear. It may be coincidental with the engine cleaning. Try rocking the bike forward and backward while shifting, and see if it is shifting up and down. How many miles did you ride it before this problem began?

The gear shift lever moves up and down when rocking the bike bike back and forth fairly easily. When it stalls i can find neutral with a little hunting but that's my inexperince with the bike i'm sure. I only rode the bike around the block maybe 3 times before this issue started. the first two trips round the block it ran through the gears very easily and forst gear was not a problem at all. This bike had been in storage for 25 years before I got my hands on it.

Does it change gears? It's hard to tell from your description of problem whether it's a power issue, or a trans issue.

I can't really tell if the gear lever changes the gears sicne I can't get the bike moving on it's own power without clanking and stalling in first gear. the gear selector pedal does move normally up and down through the gears when rocking teh bike back and forth.

If the bike were losing a cylinder under load, (cleary an electrical issue,) would it clank and stall like it's in the wrong gear like it's doing?

Short answer, yes. half power will make it feel like it's in a higher gear.
