kickstarter stuck in down position

My kickstarter is stuck in the down position, will not return forward. How do I get it unstuck?

already pulled off cover, looking for suggestions, don't really want to split cases. Any ideas?

Does the kicker wind up and return now that it's off of the bike? If so, sounds like you're going to need to split the cases, as the ratchet pawl, spring, and pin are contained in the transmission low gear. The god news is that the top end does not need to be diassmbled to do it.
