Depends on where ya have the test leads.
I worked for quite some time with a good feller who had the leads installed incorrectly.
One lead to the engine and other to the screw at the points and when the point contacts touch the light will go out. .....lm

ok, so i think i am on the right track...i pulled the points and cleaned them better, i need to reread the points adjusting part, didn't quite get that, if i forced the points close then the light goes off, one side was doing it right, the other one not so much. maybe tomorrow ill look it up again...in other seeming weirdness...the rotor says "cb72 (L)" is that right? and the little wound wires around it, some of the insulation or casing is peeled off, is that ok? thanks!

All 180 crank engines have either CB72 or CB72 (L)
Not to worry about the missing insulation. ................lm

back at it!

Post by Andy's CB » Sun Dec 19, 2010 6:22 pm

got new points the other day, put them in today, followed the instructions in the owners manual pdf i downloaded, have spark at both plugs now! the starter will crank a bit then it seems like its not doing anything but spinning free. do i need to hold down the clutch while trying to start (in neutral)? however with some attempts at the kickstarter (with starter fluid sprayed in carbs), it made some promising noises! i am sick and the bike is in my basement, warmer then the garage, but still cold, so called it a day.
here are my thoughts of what to try next:
1. advance timing a little?
2. pull carbs to figure out what they need (i think a new cable at the bare minimum, but they seem a little gummed up)
3. try starting with starting fluid again once carbs are off, see if it sounds like it wants to do anything.

how does that sound? excited to get back to tinkering with it a little...

Go to the FAQ in the yellow area to the left.
Apx. 5 down is how to tune your engine.
Use it. .............lm

  • a) Listen to The Man
    b) Sounds as though your starter clutch rollers are worn. If you tune it before starting attempts then the k/s should do the trick for now.
    c) No. Although it should unload a bit of strain when using the e-starter.
