I saw this question posted already but for the life of me I can't find it again. I have taken an old honda dream motor and put it into my already restored running dream to see if I can get this second motor running. When I kick it over and the points open it puts out a significant spark. The old motor has compression and as I said the bike ran great with other motor in it. It is also getting spark to both plugs when check against the cylinders.
Is the points sparking and indication of something wrong and if so what. Thanks again in advance each question I have asked on here has been answered in the first day I am anxious to see what you gents think about this one.

The contacts are dirty and need to be cleaned. ............lm

Clean the points, if the sparks still occur, replace the condensers.

Also be sure that all contacts in the ignition circuit are clear, give good attention to the coils/ground there.

Probably is wise to do that also after you cleaned the points.

anyway, sparks generally only occur when the condensors are worn/don't function.

'officially' you should replace the points and condensors at the same time.

I always like shiny new ignition parts, the whole lot, and I generally always change/renew it when I get problems or 'issue's' with it, or don't trust stuff.

Anyway again, sparks between the points generally only occur when the condensors are worn/don't function.

+1 on all of the above, and... Make sure the condenser is grounded well on top of the head. Clean surfaces, tight screws, etc.

A thing which happens when ya replace the points!
Ya will need to adjust them several times at about 100 mile increments as the phenolic contact area at the points cam will wear in and change the timing.
What happens is ya will have problems starting the cold engine and it won't idle well until the engine is hot.
I recommend ya try to do a good cleaning of the points and use them. ........lm

A little electrical cleaner and sandpaper and it stopped sparking and got her running. Thanks again for the help.

Hey guys,

So with the help of LM i got the points and timing corrected (0.014" gap at highest and opening @ F on rotor).

I am getting a spark between my points, is that a bad thing or a good thing?
Do I need to do something to my condensor?
