Engine Case Gasket Sealer

What kind/brand of gasket sealer should be used to seal the case halves together. The guy at the autoparts store said I need a special variety for mating surfaces without a groove and that they did not carry it.

What have you guys used with success?

I'm a fan of loctite gasket eliminator. It doesn't leave the tell-tale orange or blue flashing and has been good for all my diverse projcts. little $$$ though.
