Hmmm. I have used the GraBits to pull out 6" construction screws with rounded out heads and they were pretty amazing. The screws were so hot I couldn't hold on to them for about 10 minutes afterward. I got sets for my 2 sons and son-in-law who are in construction and they had similar good experience. I have used them on rusted bolts with good luck, too.
The key is to get the sides of the stripped out area ground out to where the extractor end will grab. Unless you do that, I agree they are pretty worthless. I also think the drill end of the GraBits doesn't always work well and can be frustrating. But, when I work at it, I almost always win out over the screw or bolt. You also have to make sure you use the right size and I have found it is usually the next size bigger than I guess at first.
You might try the left-handed bits, though you need to be more careful drilling right into the center of the rounded out head.
Also, I have a Ryobi 18V impact driver that I got in a construction set. It is an awesome tool for removing and tightening screws with Phillips heads. It won't do much good if the screw head is rounded out, but they are pretty handy for working on a motorcycle and greatly reduced the number of screw heads I round out.
