Noise

I have been working the bugs out of a 1966 CL 77 since bringing it back to life the first of the year. The bike sat since 1984. I am worried about a noise that has developed and seems to be getting louder. It's a growl and I can't seem to find the source with a stethoscope . Sounds like a chain or the sound a bad roller bearing would make. Loudest at the front of the motor. The trans does bind up between gears sometime , not sure if it' related I have wanted a Scrambler for years and just want to enjoy it. Thanks

Hi Chris,

It's a good thing, listening with your stethoscope. Can you be a little more specific about the origin of the sound ? Is it the low end, or the top end ?, left or the right side of the engine ?

Does it make a wining sound too ? When do you hear it the best, stationary or under load ?

I just started it up, warmed it up and listened again, the top end and bottom end sound fine . The noise seems to coming from the area around the kick start. This kind of makes sense since it is a constant growl and does not change with RPM . I noticed a couple of grease fittings . Is it possible something needs grease. Thanks

Hi,

Is the kick starter resonating or wobling while you here the sound ?
It's very good possible that you hear the bearing of the counter shaft or the 14 mm bush.

Check the counter shaft (kick starter shaft) for wear on the place where the rollers touch the shaft.
this surface should be in perfect shape.
