Anatomy of a Gas Cap

I'll third that observation. I've been watching closely and I find wet on the inner most portion of the gasket but not the outer. My two cents, RW

Those stainless top tank caps have been a problem from the early 60's when they were new.
The worst was if ya screwed it down to bottom the vent would close and ya would suddenly have the carbs run out of gas and ya had to open the cap then continue.
I would turn my caps 1/4 turn closed and could ride without problems.
That said I could always tell if anyone had set on my bike as when I'd be riding the engine would starve out and I'd have to open the cap.
Ever notice how when someone sits on a bike they check the cap for closed???????????????? ..............lm

I've fought with my Superhawk suddenly running one carburetor dry for years and never knew what it was! It would usually happen while in the left lane on the freeway going 70 mpg :-( Is there a solution with these caps?

Here was my solution.....

Look at the seal side of the cap and ya will see a 1/16 in. hole near the outer edge.
Drill another 180 across from that hole. .........lm

I managed to use compressed air to remove all the pieces from the gas cap but don’t know how to reassemble it? Can anyone share the order? I assume the black rubber piece rests on top of the spring followed by the metal dome inside.
