Has anyone replaced a gearshift spindle on a CA77? The tip of the spindle that goes into the gearshift lever is broken (not sure how; happened before me). Is it a difficult job? Do I have to split the case? How long should it take? I'm fairly handy but have not done this repair and I have not split open a case before. Thanks.

Its not especially hard, you don't have to split the crankcase halves, but you'll have to remove the left side cover, oil filter, and primary sprocket and clutch (as a unit) to get at it. You'll need a new left side cover gasket (still available from Honda) when you reassemble. New seal wouldn't be a bad idea either. Do you have a parts manual? I'll attach a pic showing what you'll see when you get the clutch off. Should be able to wrap the whole thing up in an evening...

I'm hoping that I have a good used spindle among my extra parts and will see if Western Hills Honda has the crank case gasket. Which seal are you referring to? Thanks again.
Carl Re: CA77 Gearshift Spindledont forget you might need a special tool to get the oil filter nut off and you have to bend up the tabs on the locking washer... its easy once you have done it, but will drive you crazy the first time if you dont know about it. two cl77, three cb77, ca77, ca72, cb160, s65 and cb750
Help Stop Global Whinning Its considered bad luck to be superstitious. The one in the cover that the spindle goes through. Good call on the nut - it is on the crankshaft and keeps the oil filter and primary sprockets, its best to attack it with a castle wrench and impact driver, but a dull screwdriver and hammer can work in a pinch. Watch which way the sprockets and washers come off and put them back the same way.
