after conversing with sdaigle, thought I'd give the electrolysis rust removal a try. I had a badly dented tank, so that became the initial candidate. Seems to be working, although not quickly. If you light a match and hold it to the bubbles, you can hear a very faint pop sometimes. Another day or two should show what sort of results to expect. The tank was badly rusted inside, so I expect the results may take some time. I did not do any prep work such as shaking chain or BB's in the tank.

honorable mention! nice, haha. with the cap not being the highest point on the tank i noticed the inside top of the tank still had rust, so i proped it up a few diffrent ways to get the rest, which added a few days, no biggie for me. stuff like this is just plain fun (or im just plain lame). Im curious what it would do to a painted component with rust on it...or a chrome component with rust..........

Steve: i will keep that in mind. Its pretty full, but Iwill shift the tank in order to get full coverage. Deaddog, its nice to hear that it lasts ! This tank is probably too badly dented to use on "Bob the Bobber" in its next incarnation as a cafe racer, but its a good first effort, and if it cleans up, I may check out getting the dent removed by one of the local body guys. I do have another tank that I am thinking of using, but it will need the treatment also.
Has anyone done the electrolysis followed by the phosphoric acid treatment ? Thats the next step on this tank after getting it de-rusted.

When you finish, dry with compressed air. Then put a handful of small nuts in the tank and shake. Empty out and blow it out again. You will find it black inside because the rust converted to ??? cannot remember but the black surface will not rust again. Do not use any acids or sealers unless the tank has a leak.

Deaddog: thanks. I did not know what to expect. I have looked in the tank and noticed it was all black. I thought it wasnt working. NOW I know. I wont use the milkstone remover on this one.
