what year & why does my bike have gas cap in middle of t

Motor vin is CA77-310509
Frame vin is CA77-310508
Wire harness vin is CA724851b .
Can you tell me what year it is and why my gas cap is in the middle of the tank. Havent seen one like it.

I think i remember hearing LM say something about how later on honda swapped the way they designed the tanks (cap to the side) to make the production faster.
