Electrpnic Ignition
Electrpnic IgnitionAnyone using the electronic ignition? Your opinion? Cost? Where to buy? Can't seem to pull it up anymore and can't remember a whole lot from last time. Thanks
A good example of how false rumors start Dave. Nothing to do with charging system. It was designed years back when the parts used were available and over time the parts have been discontinued and are not available. As we didn't purchase a super number of them Mark doesn't see any reason to spend the time to redesign and make more. I have 2 in the box but not cheap. .................lm

Ed, I read about the charging systen being the problem on this thread! http://www.honda305.com/forums/viewtopi ... c+ignition
Not trying to start false rumors!!!!! davomoto
I'll reply to this later. All to many old wrong inf (rumor) about these bikes and battery/charge system and now the EI been going on. ................lm
RIDE IT DON'T HIDE IT!
Electronic IgnitionThanks for the info LM. I think I'll just keep my old points/condensor set up. May fool around and slip a set of hotter coils in for giggles to see what happens. Mine seems to be running fine since I put in another stator and anchored it down on my latest/greatest. Has an early eight bolt or did it come with a six bolt front fender? Have eight holes and only six in the uncut bracket. Just a "floater" stator when I bought it and it had some wires broken. Replaced it and is doing good so far. Repainting a piece at a time. Have to wet sand the tank, another coat, wet sand and clear and it's done!! That will leave the rear fender although I do have one painted already. Life is good!! Especially when all is going well.
There are OLD RUMORS of how bad the charging system of the DREAM type engines from the early days that gather more followers each year and have become far from the actual truth. Dave I don't mean to accuse you of being the first (you read and believed someone else's statement who as yourself read something on the subject). In my opinion a continuation of a "OLD RUMOR"! I'll start with this. HONDA charge systems at first had something which to a newbie would think is the same as what the last of these bikes had installed. A rotor (C72)- (CB72) a stator with three wires which attached to a "diode rectifier" and then many wire connections at all parts of the bike. Somewhere around 1963 HONDA changed to a "selenium rectifier". (cheaper I suppose) Then because some bikes were """"""OVER CHARGING""""" the battery HONDA changed to the CB72(L) rotor. (L) stands for "lower"-"less" whichever you want to use but the rotor has less magnetism than the original which lowers the charge voltage. Did I say "OVER CHARGE"? My first HONDA was a 1962 CL72 which had the first system and it was my transportation any time and any where. Never a charging problem but one morning I had may bike turn to smoke when I turned the key to on. Seems that this bike being a 1962 which had a removable head light bulb that the thin hard wire end which held the bulb in the lens had penetrated through the insulation of the 12 volt lead to the headlight switch and burned that wire all the way back to the ignition switch. Investigation found that the battery has swollen so big in it's mount that it was stuck and ruined so I replaced it and replaced the burned wire and rode on until I sold the bike in early 1964. Next HONDA was a 1963 CL72 which had a selenium rectifier and a CB72(L) rotor. Only charge problem with it was one night I missed a shift from 3rd to 4th and with the lights on (2AM) I blew every bulb on that bike. Both repairs required a battery and some bulbs but never a rectifier/rotor/stator. Now I ride a 1963 CB77 with the (old design) selenium rectifier and the CB72 rotor and never a charge problem. Fortunately electrical items have changed and improved over the years so the "full wave" rectifier has improved the voltage conversion from the rotor/stater system and helped smooth out that ckt. As for what I find here and on this forum when I assist/help others with charge problems I find most problems are on/at the connectors at most any end/area of the wiring ckt. Wire broken inside the insulation, poor/dirty connectors, wrong wire at wrong connector but so far nothing to do with the actual design of the battery/charge ckt's. More often than not the actual problem has been a low or shot battery which when dealt with cured the voltage/running problem. Most charge problems can be cured by replacing the battery and or rectifier and nothing unusual about that when you read of all the charge part problems with other named bikes. The EI does require a well charged battery to perform as designed but I for one make sure my battery is "good to go" any time I go for a ride and I use the points ckt on my bike. All said I trust the system but knowing it's old and been through wet/dry many times I clean all contacts and make sure they are protected from future moisture. The last bike I restored I installed the EI system and as I made connections to it and all other connectors I put dielectric grease. I recommend others do the same. ...............lm
