64 benley ca95 throttle won't snap back

Post by Seffery » Mon Nov 03, 2025 9:59 pm

I've been through the ringer the last few hours trying to get my honda benleys throttle to snap back. I've got it down to the point where it will snap back with just the slide, but the moment I put the grip on, it no longer snaps back. The grip just stays where I turn it to. I'm lost on what to do. I would appreciate some advice quite greatly.
Thanks A Bundle,

Seffery

I'm not totally familiar with the CA95 throttle, but this tends to be a regular problem with older model bikes.

Online CA95 parts lists seems to indicate either of 2 throttle types fitted - one is the standard-type twist throttle and the other is the less-common slide-type throttle. In the twist-type throttle, the cable tends to be external to the handlebars and the rotary action takes place in the right hand side switch. The slide-type throttle, the cable tends to be internal to the handlebars and the rotary action is converted to linear action in a slide within the handlebar under the inner throttle tube.

Some suggestions:

Check and ensure the slide in the carb is not binding with the throttle body. Ensure the spring is fitted and that the slide is orientated in the carb correctly - in lots of bikes this misorientation can easily happen.

Ensure the throttle cable is routed correctly and has no sharp kinks or radii. Ensure the cable is lubed with a dry lubricant and the inner cable runs smoothly in the other cable.

If using the rotary-type throttle, ensure the throttle is free-turning and dry-lubed in the switch housing and turning freely. If using the slide-type throttle, ensure the slide assembly is dry-lubed and slides freely within the throttle tube and within the slot in the handle bar.

Once this is checked and done, carefully remove the throttle grip from the inner throttle tube and see if the throttle tube assembly (without the throttle grip) works correctly and snaps back into place. If so, then the throttle grip is binding with the handlebar or the right hand side switch body somewhere. This is the most common problem I've experienced. If this is the issue, you need to carefully put the throttle grip back on to the inner throttle tube so that it does not bind with the handlebar or switch body.

Good luck.
