should the side stand be chrome?

I think it's down to individual choice as it is near the chrome muffler. I can never remember the side stand ever being chromed originally  but I had both my stands powder coated with being underneath the bike.

I think originally they were dull plated, most likely Cadmium which was popular back then or perhaps zinc.  It's your bike so do what you fancy.

It would be zinc. Even then, cadmium's toxicity made it more expensive than zinc.
