Re: how does oil filter come apart?
I use a brass drift down through the shaft hole from engine side. Tap on the inside of the lid one side then the other and it will come out usually slowly but they do come out that way. Any drift softer than steel (plastic, wood, brass) should do the job. Just do not want to bugger up the shaft hole. Hope this helps, Rusty
You will be amazed at how much crud is in there BTW

That's what it's there for, all that crud would have reached the crank and other engine parts if it weren't for the filter.
One reason why Honda engines had an enviable reputation for longevity back in the 60s, provided of course that the oil was changed regularly and the filer cleaned out occasionally.

DJM's mention of Honda's longevity got me thinking....how many miles could you get out of a 305 motor if reasonably taken care of? 10,000? 15,000? 20,000? i ask because my 1966 305 Dream that i bought in 1973 now has 10,500 miles. it seams to start and run great , uses no oil and makes no funny noises,clutch/transmission shifts fine, but in my mind i'm thinking it's half worn out? i am 67 now and i probably will not wear it out in my lifetime
