Wrong fuel cap?

The fuel cap on my '66 CB77 sits down very close to the tank - too close for me to remove it with just my hands after it has sat for a few days. I'm wondering if maybe I have the wrong cap, but it may be possible the tank has just gotten a bit pushed in around the inlet. Please see photos.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It does look like your tank has been pushed down a bit around the filler neck. Some of the replacement caps like the ones at David Silver have a different profile that is easier to grip in that situation.

You do have an original fuel cap. Early ones had a polished aluminum top, later ones were chrome plated steel. Yours looks to be in good shape, so do not discard it, as someone wanting a period correct item could use it. The replacement ones are taller for easier grip, and have a better venting system to reduce leaking with a full tank. Regards, Chase
