Snapped/Breaking Foot Peg Mounts after only 1,000 miles

Post by akpasta » Wed Apr 18, 2012 8:40 pm

Bought a restored CB77 in January and after just over 1,000 miles I notice the foot peg brackets are rattling to hell. Left and right side where the exhaust attaches are broken clean through. The middle of the brackets are starting to show hairline cracks on the left and right side as well. Are these repro parts or original? Seems like original parts would never break apart like this after so few miles. Other parts are rattling too. I realize some parts on bikes crack from vibration, but this seems a little excessive, right? What should I do? The exhaust is attached in two other spots and is on solid, is it safe to ride? Will the passenger foot pegs eventually just snap off? That doesn't seem right. If prisig rode one of these through several states with his kid on the back, I should be able to ride around town with my girlfriend on the back without the pegs falling to pieces. What to do?

left and right sides respectively.

Here's the part in question, in case there's any confusion.

The mounts are the same design as these. Repro or original? doesn't look like the same design as other auctions that guarantee they're original.

They were probably cracked when you bought it, many of them are. I bought a number of sets until I found two that weren't. My guess is that CB77's tipped over a lot without a kickstand. Mufflers don't always fit quite right either leading to hammer and crowbar work that stresses that little muffler tab.

I've never seen those reproduced and I think they're all the same through the years.

These bikes are kind of buzzy, but mine haven't cracked in about 1000 miles, couple hundred with a passenger. Unless you have other problems that are causing excessive vibration the brackets should be fine. I'd just try to get another set, they come up on ebay pretty often.

I'm pretty certain that they weren't cracked when i got the bike. Maybe a hairline crack that wasn't visible, but I've gone over the bike pretty good since I got it, and never noticed anything.

So I can ride without a passenger, and maybe I can try mounting the foot pegs to that spot further up, perhaps they'll work there without getting in the way of my feet, but I'm worried about the pipes, as one of their three or so supports is through this mount. They seem pretty stable through the other spots they're mounted to, but without this extra support, is there risk of damage to them elsewhere?

That pair on ebay is in better shape but one of them is cracked a little, but still better than the ones i have.

You could ride as-is, but those mufflers can develop a crack on top without the support provided by that mount. I would recommend getting a pair of straight, uncracked replacements. Even NOS ones come up occasionally. The right one in the ad you have there looks okay, but you'll have to find a good lefty. BTW - I wouldn't polish them, glass beading gives them a nice satin finish just like new. Good luck!

I was expecting a "geez bro how much does your girlfriend weigh" joke, or something. Come on dudes.

Well shit. I guess I gotta replace those. Anyone have some? Ohio Cycles wants $95 each for new, unused ones....... man.

You guys think used ones are just a waste of money?

As mentioned earlier these crack when the bike falls over/crashes so if ya can get ones which aren't bent/cracked ya should be OK. ...........lm
