Top end

So I am confused. If I replace valves etc, how do I get the camshaft positioned back to tdc ? I have the engine apart to replace pistons and rings, but I am considering new valves too. What other work is recommended for the top end? Isn't there something with the seats that I should do also?

If ya replace the valves ya will for sure need to cut new seats.
In my experience Head/Valve work isn't for a garage mechanic. ............lm

Good to know. For reference, are there markers on the cam to know that it is in tdc position?

On the right side of the cam sprocket ya will see a dot or zero that is the top to have the cam at when ya install the cam chain. ............lm

is there a way to check the valves (and how well they close) with the top end apart? I read something in another post about kerosene and seepage, but did not understand.

Install plug, valves closed, fill to Over Valve surface (I use acetone as it evaporates quickly), look into intake/exhaust ports for sign of leak. ...........lm
