Greetings from UK....New owner CL77 '67

Post by DaveT » Sat Aug 20, 2016 1:58 pm

Hello Folks....Just purchased a lovely 1967 CL 77 (a rarity here in the UK) it's a nicely restored stock bike. I come from a background of owing BRITISH Singles & classic scooters (no laughing at the back of the class !) I went for my first long distance ride on the CL today, love the riding position, the noise, the "peppy" throttle response.....BUT ....what should I be expecting performance wise ? I have nothing to compare against (having not owned a bike like this before) but it felt like I was "thrashing it" to get an indicated 50 on the clock....it felt like it needed another gear & there was quite a lot of vibes through the footpegs. Maybe you guys will say "that's normal !".....just educate me on what to expect. Love the bike...it's a beautiful thing !

Dave's new CL

Post by G3 » Sun Aug 21, 2016 12:06 am

Hi Dave and welcome to the forum.

I own a 66 CL77 and it it makes me start wondering if she's gonna blow at a sustained 65mph. I don't know if it would with sustained throttle, for miles on end, but I don't like to push it for too long, neither do I want to find out (again) if she can take it. I would recommend a full tune as your bike should easily do 50mph (we are talking "mph" right?) with plenty of throttle left. It's tough to tell RPM without a tach, but they do like to rev high in the upper gears.
Regarding the "good vibrations"....mine sings loudest in the seat. One of these days I'll figure out a clever way to dampen it. I understand it's common, but what I don't care for is that same vibration causing blurry images in the mirrors, but I've gotten used to it.

Thankyou for taking the time to reply, appreciate that. Yes, we're talking MPH...but I don't can't vouch for the accuracy of the speedo. The bike I bought is a beautiful resto, but the previous owner did minimal mileage on it & it was a bit of a "show pony". I'm waiting on a clymer manual to arrive & then I can start to familiarise myself with the bike. It starts/runs great round town, but I did want to be able to use it on a few 100 mile trips to visit friends. I must admit, I only did a short test run when i bought it & didn't give it full whack in front of the owner.
I do love the bike though & it's interesting to hear other folks experiences.

Points set spot on.
Tappets adjusted correctly.
Proper amount of good clean oil.
Now go ride and not worry about 100 mile ride.
We did lots more than that in the 60's. ........lm

Thanks Loud Mouse....all help appreciate. I have a reprint owners manual for CB72/CB77....I presume points & tappets settings will be the same as CL77 ??
It says points 0.12-0.16 & tappets 0.004 (set cold)....how's that sound ?

The tappet setting is correct.
To set the points only the right side is set to (I use 0.14) then set the plate to "F" .
Now set the left side points to what ever the gap to have the left side fire at "LF" and not worry the gap. .................lm

CL77 performance

Post by DJM » Thu Oct 06, 2016 2:42 pm

I have a 1965, small brake version CL77 with a 350 kit fitted and love it to bits.

I ride it regularly, often 100 miles plus in a day and it certainly isn't a 'show pony'.

Yes, they do seem to rev a bit but you'll soon get used to that, if the engine is in good condition, don't worry it isn't about to fly apart under you!

You'll find that they get smoother the faster you go, within reason, and mine will comfortably buzz along for mile after mile at 70mph plus.

It will go faster than that too but if I want to ride faster I use my CB77!

Are you sure you have the standard gearing fitted?

The CL will comfortably pull a 16 tooth gearbox sprocket which brings the revs down but does take the edge off the acceleration, I tried one on mine but put it back to standard gear 15 / 37 gearing
