Rotor/stator installationRotor/stator installationMy '63 CB77 engine is on the bench upside down having just completed replacement of transmission parts and the case is buttoned up and I'm having trouble remounting the alternator. I installed the starting sprocket and stopper, then the rotor. Everything is spinning freely at this point, but after slipping the stator around the rotor and tightening the three mounting bolts, there's some rubbing. I tried the reverse order...installing the stator first, but it's still not good. I had no problem with this assembly in the past, and it was working fine when I took it off and it's not the first time I've removed them. I note that the stator has nuts on the back side of the mounting bolts which are held captive by bosses cast into the stator but the purpose of them is unclear. Also it seems that unless I have the stator installed perfectly parallel to the rotor there's a chance of rubbing. However it doesn't seem plausible that one is expected to true up the stator with the mounting bolts, you should be able to turn the bolts until each is snug and away you go.
I closely inspected both rotor and stator for burrs/misshapen surfaces and didn't see any. I haven't dropped any of the parts, and I smoothed the surfaces with very fine sandpaper just to be sure. What am I doing wrong? Loudo, is the rotor rubbing on the stator? It can be a bit tricky to get the stator bolted down evenly. There's a lip on the back of the auminum housing, that must slide into the cases evenly. Make sure its all going in straight by tightening each of the three bolt a little at a time. The three captive nuts are for the outer cover screws.
davomoto Uh, hmmThanks, Davomoto...I know what you're saying but I didn't explain that very well. I've attached a couple of photos. The first shows the bolt through the stator with a nut on the other end. The second photo shows a closeup of a bolt with the stator semi-installed. I usually organize my parts with egg cartons, labels, and drawings, but I am sometimes in the habit of simply rethreading a nut onto a bolt for "storage" if I want to make sure it doesn't get lost. So I was thinking maybe these nuts on the back side of the stator through which I've temporarily threaded the mounting bolts are perhaps NOT associated with the stator. But if so, where'd they come from and why the heck would I have threaded them onto the bolts?
AckSo where did those nuts come from? What is the deal?
It's possible I've taken a complete leave of my senses. I mean, again. And here I was priding myself on how extra-organized I was being. Thanks, guys...I appreciate the help.
