Late CL77 Front Wheel Bearing Removal ??

Post by Faust » Sat Dec 13, 2008 2:16 pm

I have started on my recently acquired project, a '66 CL77, before getting a manual. The brakes were frozen, so I pulled apart the front hub. The front wheels bearings seem good, but I want to clean and repack them. My difficulty is that I can't get them out. I have removed the 3 screws in the hub and tapped in all reasonable places. I don't really want to start banging. Can anyone give me some
guidance?

You can hammer all day and they will never come out that way. They come out from both sides. You need to look inside of the bearings at the spacer between them. Take something and move rhe spacer to one side(off center) and then you can use a drift the same size as the axle to drive the opposite side bearing out by hitting against the offset spacer, if you don't have a bearing puller or press.

You can do it with something sharp like a big flat bladed screwdriver to move the spacer. You will probably booger it up a bit, but you can polish it up and make sure it is as new and the axle slides in freely before assembling it back together.

Just be careful with the hammering and work different sides of the bearing spacer when hammering, by moving it around.
