Can't date my CA77 Dream, need some info please

Post by jerrybb » Sun Feb 04, 2007 12:49 am

Hi all, new member here- I have a '62 CA77 needing restoration, but my question now is on another CA77 I just picked up. Got the frozen engine free but was told it is a '65. There is no paperwork, and the Bill Silver Classic Honda book does not have the serial # range that pertains to mine. Frame is CA78-313556 and engine is CA77E-318807. Bill's book says that some 1964 and later Dreams are marked CA78, but the engine serial number leads me to believe that it is a '63 even though the frame number isn't in the range he says. I haven't taken the tank off to see what the wiring harness says.

Anyone have any info on this? Thanks, Jerry in Nor Calif

I think I agree with the 1963 date, but Bill's book that I have doesn't quite match. It's close enough for me, though.

He says the CA78 designation was used in 1964 and later but mine has it.

His range for engines in 1963 is #310001 to 314731 but mine is 318807. Maybe you have better info in the restoration guide, which I haven't ordered yet.

I'm going to DMV tomorrow am to register it as a '63 which I think is right. I appreciate the time you took to look this up. Now I just have to see if I can get it running. Have the carb apart, loaded with gunk. Film at 11...

Bill's restoration guide has the same #'s.The number in his book may be the highest # for a bike he had at the time he wrote the book but,From what I have learned anything with 3xxxxx would be 63',2xxxxx 62',1xxxxx 61'.65' and up had 7 digit vin#.Another way to help to date it is on the wire harness there should be a tag stuck on it with the date on it.It is hard to see unless you take the harness out.It is hidden inside the frame below the gas tank. Not full proof, but good indication. Also, I think the rear shock support covers on the rear fender were changed from 63' to 64'.The 63' had more of a crescent moon shape. Some one else may shed some other light on this also or correct me if I'm wrong.Joe
