Dripping Petcock

Post by Mrburnn » Sat Jun 09, 2018 6:30 am

Good morning everyone,
After 1-1/2 years I am almost ready to take a test ride on my '67 CL77. I appreciate all the help in the past but now seem to have one remaining issue. After cleaning the petcock I have a constant drip (one drip per second) coming from either one of the nipples when the valve is in the off position. I have replaced the valve packing (rubber washer) and the valve lever spring (metal compression washer). Does anyone have an opinion as to what might be the problem?

I tried to upload some pictures but can't seem to get the site to accept them.

Thanks for you time!

A few of us are having the picture problem as it used to be but the owner of the forum doesn't seem bothered.
All I can suggest is you try another gasket set as some are poorer quality it happened to me.

Thank you for your reply! I guess that's all I can do. I just hate spending money on parts when I am not sure they will fix my problem. Any recommendation on a reliable site to purchase the gasket?

Thanks again!

I fought the same trouble for a while. Ended up buying a more complete kit from Scrambler Cycle on eBay for like $12 + shipping. Fixed my issue.

This one fixed mine 232037865180 e bay.
I assume your petcock is in good condition as when I was bying a replacement I was sold a terrible example from e bay. They made sure they didn't photograph the broken area.
Note the small washers that go on the screws that could be the problem.

Interesting comment concerning the two attachment (to the tank) screws. I can't find a parts list that shows the screws let alone the rubber washers. I did not use rubber washers when I attached the petcock to the tank. Would gas leaking around the screws somehow bypass the on / off lever seal?

Yes quite easily past the threads to where the lever is or the bowl if it isn't seated properly.
See pics on google.
