hawk rear sprocket mounting

shop manual doesnt show this. What direction does the rear sprocket mate to the wheel?
my old sprocket was bolted on with the recesed part facing the wheel. Is this correct?
seems like the dust shield fits better the other way.

The recess installs OUT. ......................lm
