Dream Carb Overflow Tube Routing

Post by Bob750 » Tue Feb 11, 2014 10:00 pm

Hi all!

Trying to figure out where the carb overflow tube goes.

At the moment I have it running from the bowl, over the clamshell crossmember, over to the left side and out behind the clamshell. It then follows the curve of the motor down and between the frame and centerstand bracket, then between swingarm pivot and centerstand pivot.

Anyone out there know the proper (ahem, "correct") way to route it if that's not it?

Thanks!

Bob

Providing it doesn't go uphill ( or above the normal fuel level) at any point it should do the job...

This may be controversial, but I believe the overflow should terminate in the engine valley beneath the clamshell. There's a smaller drain hole under the bigger hole where the wires come through. If the carb does overflow, a mixture of gas, chain lube and grease from the over-greased clutch actuator will drain out the bottom of the right side cover and look like a huge oil leak. You can put that in your chain saw. Whether the overflow tube goes through the hole or stops just short we'll leave to personal preference. The breather hose should terminate at that location as well.

That makes sense...

Thanks, guys! That should look a little cleaner than what I have currently.

I guess in the case of the breather tube, that's what the little cutout in the left clam shell is for?? ...Tube comes down right side of head in those U-grooves cut into the fins, hangs a left under the carb spacer, drops down through the cutout, and then hangs a right to the perfectly sized hole in the right side of the valley. As I have it now, once it leaves the grooves above the carb, it soars through the air, next to the right "valve breather" tube, flies by the float bowl and into The Void, then drops down to the little hole in the top of the case, seen in your pic between the clam shell screw hole and the upper right rear engine mount boss. That hole will also drain to the ground via the drive sprocket cover drain hole or out the back edge, under the lower chain cover. I shall experiment with these ideas!

Thanks again!

Bob - Couple of shots below. Breather hose should come down the left side held in place by that clip on the tensioner. I may have one if you need it. Those cutouts on the right side hold grommets that the condenser wires go through (not really visible in the picture, but you get the idea).

And... An original breather hose isn't long enough to reach that hole on top, so I think it's supposed to just terminate with the overflow. I wouldn't put a "trap" in that line anyway.
