It's super important to be thorough with each step of tuning your carbs, since each step relies on the previous to be in perfect working order. The float height being commonly overlooked. Those things need to be perfect. Make sure they aren't catching on a gasket or don't have any holes.
If the float height it correct, the needle is in good condition and correct (as teazer pointed out), and your timing is correct, then it's just a matter of finding the right jet size.
Even though it's slim, I'd double check the filters to make sure they're breathing properly. It's also possible that your carbs could be worn out. But my best guess is it's the floats, needles, jets or combo of those things.
I recommend keeping a log what changes you're making and what the effects are. It's easy to burn alot of time "shooting in the dark" with carb issues.

Re: response
What height did you set the floats, and did you check for pinholes in them?naptown68superhawk wrote:i guess burning them up was the wrong way to put it. blackened with carbon would have been clearer. i set the floats with the eyeball method but i guess i did it wrong. i will find my camera and put a picture on soon. ive destroyed 8 plugs now. i was thinking about getting a hotter running plug is this a bad idea? i got NGK D8HA. im using the old needles becasue i read that the carb kit i got from honda the needs that came with would make it run even richer. i think its a float problem. i missed something somewhere.

floats
the first thing i did when i got the bike is get new floats. well one float anyway. the right side float had a few pin holes in it sooo, it filled with fuel. yum 20 year old fuel. i set the floats according to a measurement i read on this website. measuring from the base of the bowl. something like 26.5 cm. dont realy remember off hand. and i made sure it matched the other other ways of setting it i also read on this site.im gonnda check the jet and needle size even tho its factory i put back in. reason being, i got the keyster carb kit. then i hear all sorts of bad stuff about it. how can i tell if the carbs are just worn out.? nothing is bent the springs are good inside looked real clean. but im gonna take those babys off tomorrow and scrub scrub scrub.

carbs
Hey Naptown,
I've used all the parts in the Keyster carbs with good success, and I suggest you try using both the jets and the needles. And DO check the floats when you take it apart to see if they are getting waterlogged (gaslogged!). And remember that your jets COULD have been drilled out, so that the number on them is not actually the correct one. I'd start with known parts - jets and needles.
Good luck! I'm interested to know what you find when you get it all figured out.

Re: floats
Nope. PW26 carb float height is 22.5mm! Here's some topic info.naptown68superhawk wrote:the first thing i did when i got the bike is get new floats. well one float anyway. the right side float had a few pin holes in it sooo, it filled with fuel. yum 20 year old fuel. i set the floats according to a measurement i read on this website. measuring from the base of the bowl. something like 26.5 cm. dont realy remember off hand. and i made sure it matched the other other ways of setting it i also read on this site.im gonnda check the jet and needle size even tho its factory i put back in. reason being, i got the keyster carb kit. then i hear all sorts of bad stuff about it. how can i tell if the carbs are just worn out.? nothing is bent the springs are good inside looked real clean. but im gonna take those babys off tomorrow and scrub scrub scrub.

Running extremely rich? Starts with no choke? First thing to check is that you've put the slides back into the correct carbs (they can be incorrectly reversed!). Slide cutaway should face the filter, not the engine.

slides
yep i mos def had the slides reversed. they were facing the eengine not the air filters. also i did the new float measurement i got from the thread. its very precise. got it as close as perfect as can be. now there is no black smoke. has to be choked to start. but now everytime i start it it acts as if the petcock is turned off(ITS NOT)and running out of fuel. you know idle very very high like 4500 rpm all the way to 6000 rpm. i tweeked the idle and all the other. i think im gonna take the needle and lower the clip from the last to 2nd to last. but thats top end . so im kinda stumped. any advise?
