Disappointing that no one on this forum could help

Post by smi481 » Sun Sep 03, 2006 8:52 am

Back on August 10th, both "carlluvscorinne" and I asked
questions on this forum, about fork oils for vintage Hondas.

As many of the veteran forum members know, often times
when you buy a 40 year old bike, the original manuals are NOT
included because they have been lost over the years. So the
new buyers have no answers to basic questions ... like fork
oil options.

We have waited over three+ weeks .... but not ONE helping
comment was posted on this forum?

Now, NOS Owners Manuals and Technical Restoration
books have been purchased from Ebay, etc, and we
are learning more each day.

But, it's disappointing because we thought this was an
electronic forum we could get help about the bikes we
are restoring, within a week or so. But to this date, it
never came.

SMI: Typically, in August, lots of people are away on vacation or are simply trying to get as many miles under the wheels as possible, before the rains. This happens every August.

Great! Why not step up and write up a summary of your questions and then the answers you are discovering. That, and also perhaps an "trial and error" account of what you did to solve (or try to solve) your problem/question would make a far more meaningful post than a public reproach to other Forum Members.

I too had a question as to what oil to add to my forks. In the service manual, White Fork Oil was recommended. I had also heard that ATF is a suitable alternative. While visiting a local cycle shop/salvage yard, I asked the parts guys what they would recommend. He told me that ATF would work fine but they had a fork oil in stock that he said if it were his bike he would use.

It is Bel-Ray High performance 10W fork oil. It also came in 5W but I thought for an older bike, the 10W might be better.

Comes in a 1 liter bottle for $12.00

Haven't installed it yet but will shortly.

Will try to post a result.

I used Bel-Ray 20W fork oil in my CL77 and it works OK. To get the 280cc's accurately, my local drug store gave me some graduated medicine borrles and syringes so it was a snap to get the right quantity.

Oops, that would be bottles, not borrels.

Thanks, that's a good idea. I was going to try and find a graduated laboratory container..........The proper name escapes me.

280cc is the proper amount??????????????

Yes 280cc's is correct. The original shop manual called for No. 60 white Spindle Oil, whatever that was.
