ring compressor ideas? anyone

any ideas on a homemade compressor.. i bought one and i cant get it to close small enough on piston and its too tall to fit under the cylinders

Make one from a piece of steel banding, use a hose clamp, have someone hold the cylinder while you use your fingers, probably many other methonds.

I'm not keen on hose clamps just because they are not 100% smooth. I would suggest some banding material and a hose clamp. Make sure you smooth any rough edges on the banding material.

If its a 180 crank, I just use a wooden tongue depressor and or fingernails to work them in one at a time. Use plenty of oil. Ring compressors are more trouble than they're worth on that size piston IMO...

I have a ring compressor that will go small enough, but I think the studs will interfere with it. I just tore my cylinder off and pulled my pistons. I haven't put it in place so I'm not absolutely sure if it will work or not. I'll check when I get the chance.

Has anyone tried putting the pistons in the cylinders then installing the piston pins after? This would eliminate the problem of the studs interfering with the compressor, not to mention dealing with two pistons at once on the 360 degree model.

I suppose this might be possible to do. I personally would rather make certain I got the wrist pin clips in correctly as that would be bad if they would come out. I had no issues getting the rings started as there is a slight chamfered edge on the bottom of the cylinders. As 48 lesco said lube with oil and work one at time worked for me too.

One trick is to find a way to support the cylinder block and then slowly ease the pistons up into the bore i.l.o. lowering the block onto the pistons.
