There are two oil seals on the right side of the crank. The first one is the large oil seal that fits in the cases. The starter sprocket sets in it and there is an oil seal in the end of the starter sprocket that seals the penetration of the crank end.

Two Seals per HT

Thanks for your reply. Am I correct that the starter seal can be replaced from 'outside' the motor just pulling the cover? but the other seal is internal? I'm looking at schematics of parts and my after market manual but not sure. I have been told the starter seal is the most likely culprit, but others here say they have changed 5 seals and still have leaks.

They are both external but the large one is normally replaced when the cases are split and that's easy when the cases are apart. The seal can be pulled and replaced with the cases together but does take some work, prep and patience. It's easy to mar or tear the seal edge if you bull your way through. This will give you an opportunity to inspect the starter clutch for any cracks/loose screws and the condition of springs/caps and rollers too.

Thanks again, I have the part # for the 20x30x5 mm starter seal (91208259000) & (91202253000) superseded #. Ohio Cycle seems to list by the first # 91208-259-000 @ $5.00. I think based on your comments on the degree of difficulty I will replace the one seal and cross my fingers.
many thanks for your time and expertise helping me with this leak.
