Baby hawk engine assembly questions

Post by Jlovvorn » Wed Apr 03, 2013 7:43 pm

So, ready to button up, but still have some concerns.

1. The camshaft in the head has a tiny amount of play, even with the points oil seal in place. Not a lot, but it moves left to right a bit less than 1/8 of an inch. Problem? Or normal.

2. Do I use any sealant on gaskets, or assemble dry like the 305? If dry, do I put a dab on the head gasket o rings, like with the 305?

3. Cam timing. I have the valves screwed all the way out on the head, and the sprocket O mark due north. This puts the peg on the points end of the cam shaft due south. But when I put the advancer on, it sideways, with the centerline of the points plate angled at 2pm and 8pm, rather than horizontal. Is that normal for the advancer plate? It's sits tight and feels correct, but the fact that its not horizontal seems troubling.

4. Anything else I should look out for before I close it up?

Thanks a ton foradvice.

An eight of an inch?, that seems like a lot. Some end play is needed, a little extra shouldn't hurt anything. About the only way to reduce the end play of the camshaft is to install thinner gaskets under the end caps. I never put sealer on an O-ring, that's likely to keep it from working like it should, a little dab of grease or nothing.

Thanks Mike. I think it's more like a 16th.

I will go dry on the gaskets. Thanks.
