Cafe style CB72/77

Post by honda brian » Thu Dec 29, 2016 12:50 am

Hi guys, thought you might like to look at the latest project. It started off with a spare CB72 frame and a CA77 crankcase set. Started in Jan 2016, and now almost completed.

Honda CB72 fitted with a 305cc engine.

This bike has had a ground up rebuild with many new parts:
Frame, swing arm and centre stand powder coated.
Early (larger) 38mm front forks, stripped, cleaned new seals fitted and repainted.
CAFE racer style front and rear guards, stripped and repainted.
Engine fully stripped, inspected and rebuilt with new big end bearings. Cylinder head ported and polished. Megacycle sports camshaft fitted. New cam chain and cam bearings. New CA77 (std) pistons and new rings.
Original wheels, stripped and repainted with two pack silver. Rebuilt with replated spokes and new tyres.
CB350F fuel tank modified to suit CB72 frame, stripped, cleaned, resealed internally, and painted.
Cafe style seat manufactured, painted and upholstered. New side covers manufactured and painted to suit.
Rear sets manufactured to suit. Improved brake cable mount fitting manufactured for a better cable run. Racing megaphones fitted with baffles manufactured to suit.
CB350K control switches fitted to clip on bars.
We fired the bike up yesterday for the first time and it ran quite well. Used LM tuning techniques, and it ran nicely.
Now tidying up the wiring before putting the tank, battery and seat on permanently.

Hope the photos appear, as we've had issues attaching them.

Brian and Rich

I appreciate that cafe-racer style is not everybody's cup of tea, but I love 'em. Great job - looks fantastic.

Muddy
Thanks.

Thanks Muddy. the thing has given Rich and I a few headaches, but we are over most of them now. Hopefully!

Lovely work Brian

Struggling to find time to get on with my own projects, but great to see good work happening.

Thanks Graham, it's a bit further on than the last time you saw it!
Rich and I did a bit of tidying up today. He was sorting out wiring and I sorted the gear lever. It will all be finished soon, then onward with another CB72. (The one in the background). Although, Rich has had an idea about a CB72 with alloy rims and a disc front brake on a CB250 front fork assembly! I laced up the front alloy rim to a CB350F front hub the other day and it looks like it's provided some inspiration.
We'll post more pics as we go along.
I'll be over in July. Maybe we can catch up?
Regards Brian.
