My 1965 Superhawk

Post by promking » Thu May 07, 2015 7:55 am

Hello everyone.

My name is Joe, this is kind of my introduction post and restoration thread.

I've always been a fan on the superhawks, and I finally got my own.

She's in pretty good shape overall. I picked it up from a gentleman who let the bike sit for 5 years or so, bike hasn't been cleaned in some time. He told me it was restored a few years back by a gentleman named Joe Collins in PA. However, this is where my restoration begins.

I'm not going to chop, cut or destroy this bike so please don't worry about that.
If anything my plans are to make this bike OEM+

First things first he drained the gas, and the bike had no gas in it for 5 years. So first thing I did was add fresh gas, fight with it, and got it to idle.

I need a new throttle cable, carb build kit, air filters, and a new battery.

I was thinking of painting the " silver " gloss black, and doing the motor in a black and gold theme. With a few accent pieces gold plated.

However we'll see I might keep it all OEM.

This weekend I start polishing my brains out, check the points etc.

But my one question is my CHROME on the side of the tank... It's in " okay " shape to me, it has a few dings on it... I would love to either rechrome mine or purchase reproduction pieces if they are available? Does anyone have any recommendations on whom to use to rechrome them?

Thank you!

Hi Joe

Nice project! Welcome to the forum.

You can still get tank panels on eBay and there are still good chrome places. One of our US colleagues will let you know soon. I have a great place in the UK that has replated several sets for me.

Just for info, your left tank badge is on backwards..... :-) Reproductions of the OEM plastic badges are available from Ray Byrne.

Joe

That bike looks like it doesn't need much. Check out my 1961 project in this section......

Well took some of the broken frayed repaired wiring apart... and found a lot of repairs on repairs ....

After I repaired and corrected everything. I ran into some problems the lights don't work now unless they're grounded to the frame.. for example the lights will work perfectly if I take the speedo out and lay it on the handlebars.... so I'm assuming I need an extra ground?

Also neutral.switch only works if it's grounded to the frame as well....

That's it for today for me. I've been searching on this forum like crazy for people with the green wire woes... I have the two green wires with the white marking connected from the headlamp and the speedo... and the 4 positive green wires connected into the 4 way tee. One diagram has this as 3 wires in color and the other diagram has 4 wires in black and white.

Any help? Thank you

Well and update... everything works perfect with the speedo cabled attached... I guess they're grounds as well??
