C92 1959??

Post by Greggie-e » Wed Oct 15, 2008 12:49 am

Hi,
I have almost finished my restoration of my C92 so I thought I would post up the progression shots.
It has taken me about 6 months, so far.

I bought it from a small country town about 4 hours drive from where I live (it was a long day). It belonged to a fellow who's passion was more early british bikes, but he sadly passed away and his wife was willing to part with this bike.

The first thing I did was make sure that everything worked. It needed a new coil and the fuel tap was, well melted all on the inside.
Apart from that it seemed in pretty good shape. The engine ran without any noises and it did not leak at all.
There seemed to be an intermittant electrical problem that could be solved by giggling all the wires where ther air filter was, and the starter button was broken on the inside.

paint shop

Post by Greggie-e » Wed Oct 15, 2008 12:59 am

After much running around I found a shop that would paint the bike quickly and well.
They have a good reputation, although later I discovered that they have painted over the chassis number.
Anyone know where the chassis number on a C92 is supposed to be??
Anyway they did a good job and turned the bike around in 3 weeks after I stripped it and had it blasted

the rebuild

Post by Greggie-e » Wed Oct 15, 2008 1:08 am

the rebuild took some time as I had issues finding new shock absorbers. The old ones were not much chop.
I ordered some from Speedsupplies.com and am still waiting for them (I also got charged for them twice)
then I ordered some rear ones from the Netherlands. They arrrived quickly, but I lost a lot of time waiting for Speedsupplies.com I ordered some front shockies from thailand (ebay) but when they arrived they were worse than the old ones so I pulled the old ones apart and re-oiled/straightened the shafts etc.
It also gave me time to get the spokes redone on wheels I ordered from Thailand.
That worked out well.

the rebuid

Post by Greggie-e » Wed Oct 15, 2008 1:12 am

the rebuild was fairly rapid, but having a new small family I was only allowed to work on the bike at night and only for about 4 hours a week.

the main issues I came across was that anything I bought from Asia just did not quite fit, and having to work at night when the baby was asleap I could not make much noise. Thus a 1 minute grinding job turned into a 1 hour sanding job.

nearly done

Post by Greggie-e » Wed Oct 15, 2008 1:21 am

Nearing the end of the build the issues really start to show.
1 getting a battery, no one in Australia seems to sell the right size battery, I have three on order from various shops, and do not fancy my chances at any of them.
2 Wiring, I am useless at witing, this has made itself apparent.
When I first 'finished' putting it togetherone indicator worked as did the head light. No other electrics worked. Now I have it at the stage where everything works bar the ignition system and now the headlight system is blowing fuses (I think it is the switch)

One big issue I have is that I cannot find the chassis number. I might just have to stamp a new one on. Does anyone know where the Chassis number is supposed to be on a C92?

The horn does not work, it is an internal problem with the horn. I would like to fix it as most of the other parts on the bike are original restored. However I have no idea how to tackle the problem. Sometimes it lets out a short bleep, but generally nothing.

The ignition system is completely dead despite the fact that there is power to the coil. I am thinking that perhaps the engine is not providing a good earth... something to check this evening.

On a C95, the serial numbers are below the left side cover, may be the same on your bike. The horns usually have an adjustment screw, small phillips head, that you can fiddle with. If you can't find that, please post a pic of horn. The bike looks great by the way, nice job!
