Thank you, G. The bush is nice; that cover is going on the '66. The other parts are for the '64, which I want back on the road ASAP. The paint is the VHT brand that 48lesco recommended. It applied a bit differently than the Duplicolor I've used in the past and the results weren't quite as good. I think it's because it's still too cold here. I oven cured it (shh...the wife's away for a few days ;-)) ). It worked better today on the '64's starter motor, which will not be oven cured.

Crankshaft installation tomorrow.

A crank bearing locating pin. I thought I had all 4, but I must have lost one because I can’t find it. It must be with one of the rollers I lost for the kick start shaft bearing, which I had to replace. A new one for the crank bearing arrived in today’s mail.

The crankshaft went in this afternoon, but not without a bit of difficulty with the left (clutch side) bearing. It needed gentle persuasion. While spinning the crank after dropping it in, I noticed a bit of warble on the right side. Bent shaft?

That looks pretty horrible. The 'runout' should be less than 1 thou (0.001) inch on the chank. Maybe yours has been dropped? Using it like that will result in vibration and premature failure.

If you have facilities and a good dead-blow hammer, you should be able to get it in line. The crank case will do as a place to do the truing. I think it more likely that the crank is out of line rather than the shaft bent.

To check for truth you need to pull off the outer bearings and put a dial gauge against the shaft.



Once you find where the misalignment is, you 'bump' the appropriate flywheel to move the shaft back in line. You need to be patient as it's possible to make it worse. It's like building a wheel, you quickly learn which way to go and how much of a whack you need to give it.

Thanks, G. I have not dropped the crank, but it has had a long life, so who knows what it's been through. I can't use it like that, so, as I have nothing to lose, I might give straightening it a try. I will, however, be on the lookout for a replacement which, as you know, would be a pig in a poke and I might end up as bad or worse off than I am now. Nothing is easy or straightforward with this project.
